The New Adult Mental Health and Addictions Facility in St. John’s is a complete replacement of the Waterford Hospital, previously known as the Hospital for Mental and Nervous Disorders. Opened in 1874, the Hospital has a long history of providing crucial support to the community, and needed to be given a new life in the form of a new building. This newly-designed facility will be built on the Health Sciences Centre campus and will connect to the existing Health Sciences Centre Hospital – integrating physical health care with mental health care. The new, state-of-the-art facility will offer 102 beds, and include a forensic unit, two adult acute units, a geriatric unit, a short stay unit, and an eating disorder inpatient program. It will also feature a therapeutic mall which will include services such as physiotherapy, a fitness studio, an art therapy program, a village square, and a horticultural suite. The new facility is designed to create a holistic and welcoming environment conducive to recovery by making strategic use of natural light, outdoor terraces, greenspaces, colours, and artwork.
LMDG is working hard on the review and assessment of the level of fire protection and life safety relative to the standards set out in the National Fire Code (NFC) and the National Building Code (NBC). The team is readily available to answer and assist the client with any inquiries and issues that may arise.
