The Bayers Lake Community Outpatient Centre is an important part of a greater plan to revitalize the healthcare system in Halifax. The Victoria General Hospital has provided essential medical care for the community and was in need of upgrades. Having experienced numerous infrastructure disruptions in the last decade, its deterioration began impacting clinicians’ ability to provide care. The construction of this new outpatient facility meant giving quality medical care back to the community in a better environment.
This facility will house many of the same services as the Victoria General site including diagnostic, dialysis/renal, geriatric, interdisciplinary, mental health and wellness, rehabilitation, and administrative and support services. Additionally, patients will have access to a collaborative health team and public spaces. The project will improve access to care through an upgraded and easily accessible building. This health centre features a healthy indoor environment, reduced greenhouse gas emissions, and an efficient use of water, energy, and other resources.
LMDG provided building code consulting services for the duration of the project, reviewing and assessing the level of fire protection and life safety in comparison with the standards outlined in the Nova Scotia Building Code (NSBC) and the Nova Scotia Fire Code (NSFC). Special features of this review included the preparation of an alternative solution for sprinkler protection, and the preparation of the facility’s Fire Safety Plan.
