COMPLETION

The Mathematics Faculty (M4) project at the University of Waterloo is the construction of what will be the epicentre of the Mathematics section, and the only dedicated mathematics faculty in North America. The five-storey building will connect to the existing David Centre, Math & Computers building, and M3 building. It will feature a variety of classroom spaces, dry labs, and a cutting-edge, eco-friendly server room (dubbed “The Green Room”). The facility will also host research fields outside of mathematics like fintech, data science, and cryptography.
A significant facet of this project is its passive sustainability features, the most notable of which being an ancient cooling method known as a solar chimney. It functions by providing a path for hot air to rise, creating a slight vacuum that draws fresh air in from windows on lower levels, essentially creating a free ventilation system. The project design also utilizes strategic building positioning and window placement to improve sustainability, bringing them closer to their goal of zero-carbon performance.
The project has already received recognition, earning the 2025 “Rethinking The Future” Award in the Institutional (Concept) category.
LMDG is providing building code consulting services on this project, with the review being based on the 2012 Ontario Building Code (OBC) and the Ontario Fire Code (OFC). Our team is performing a thorough review and to date has prepared key reports, letters, and an alternative solution to prescriptive compliance.
