COMPLETION
2026
LMDG is providing building code services for this state-of-the-art Edmonton-based community and recreation centre. The new multipurpose facility, Coronation Park Sports and Recreation Centre, will connect to the existing Peter Hemingway Fitness and Leisure Centre and include a walking/running track, gymnasiums, multi-purpose and program rooms, an indoor play space, and an indoor cycling track. The centre is designed to host international competitions and serve as a high performance-training centre for cyclists and triathletes in the city.
The building’s elliptical design is achieved using two distinct integrated structures. The inner space will feature long-span steel elliptical trusses, which allow for efficiency in material and positive drainage for the roof. The outer space over the running track will be built as a wood-steel hybrid ‘ribbon’ roof. Unique to this building’s design, the velodrome will be placed a full storey above the ground-level floor, making it fully visible from the main floor of the building.
At the running track level, a continuous band of glazing provides views of the park and natural daylight to the track. At the upper roof level, a continuous band of clerestory glazing separates the primary roof structure. As an indoor facility, the building’s design is one of the first of its kind and is able to support year-round triathlon training.
