Located at one of the busiest intersections in Mississauga since 1958, the new Trillium Health Partners Peter Gilgan Hospital will replace the existing hospital while keeping its iconic location at Hurontario Street and Queensway West. The new hospital will stand 22 storeys tall and will be approximately 2.8 million square feet, coming in at almost triple the size of the existing facility and becoming the largest hospital in Canada. It will house over 950 beds, with 23 operating rooms instead of 14, advanced diagnostic imaging facilities, as well as a new pharmacy and clinical laboratory. Aimed to reduce wait times and improve patient experience in the province, a key feature of this new hospital will be the new and expanded Emergency Department. The facility will continue to house highly specialized care through regional programs such as the centre for cancer care, advanced cardiac surgery, and geriatric mental health services.
The new Peter Gilgan Hospital will include the 200,000 SF, first-of-its-kind in Ontario, Shah Family Women’s and Children’s Hospital. It will be well-equipped with the latest technology and expanded and improved specialized care. It will include dedicated mental health inpatient beds for children and youth – a first in Mississauga, one of the largest neonatal intensive care units (NICU) in the province – including specially designed couplet care suites to accommodate parents and babies staying together, and family-centred care throughout all areas of the hospital including a dedicated paediatric zone in the Emergency Department.
On top of the many firsts this hospital is claiming, the Project is also pursuing high sustainability standards. It is targeting LEED v4 BD+C Healthcare Silver certification, which is an aggressive energy performance target. Additionally, the team is implementing the Toronto Green Standard sustainable development measures, in anticipation of future City of Mississauga standards.
LMDG is proud to be providing building code consulting services throughout this Project. This includes reviewing an assessing the level of fire protection and life safety compared to the requirements identified in the Ontario Building Code (OBC) and the Ontario Fire Code (OFC). Additionally, with the complexity of an undertaking of this magnitude, our team has compiled several performance-based design alternative solutions to prescriptive compliance regarding items such as oxygen storage, standpipes, and timed egress analysis.
