The East Harbour Transit Hub project is the development of a new interchange station that will serve the Riverdale, Riverside, and Leslieville communities. It will be located east of the Don Valley Parkway and south of Eastern Avenue, connecting to the Lakeshore East and Stouffville GO lines, as well as the future Ontario Line subway. This hub is set to “rewire” public transit in Toronto, vastly improving connectivity within the city, as well as trips extending to the Greater Toronto Hamilton Area.
The hub will feature six tracks, modern passenger concourses, accessible pick-up and drop-off areas, three island platforms, a staffed customer service area, and bike parking. The new station will enable passengers to bypass Union Station, reducing crowding there by up to 14,000 people during the busiest travel hours. Its integration into a new “Transit Oriented Community”, being developed by Cadillac Fairview, is also expected to create more than 50,000 jobs, as well as new residential/commercial spaces, and community amenities and parks.
LMDG is playing a key role in assessing the fire protection and life safety aspects of this new construction relative to the requirements set out in the Ontario Building Code and Fire Code. To date, we have performed modelling and several analyses including dead-end analyses and occupant load calculations to help our client achieve compliance. Additionally, we provided accessibility consulting services to bring the relevant design standards including the AODA, and the Toronto Accessibility Design Standards.
